An earthquake is a natural calamity which has power to destroy human lives in few seconds. It is lonely responsible for the huge damage to living and non-living beings. Earlier, people were unaware of the reasons of earthquake occurrence and the extent of damage. They believed that earthquake occur whenever mother earth become angry with them.

However, actually an earthquake is the result of release of elastic energy after forceful tectonic plate movements. Elastic energy released in the form of seismic or shock waves which travels for a long distance outwards in all directions from the centre point (a place of maximum destruction). High-rise buildings and structures of the cities can be badly destruct by the huge violent shaking force of earthquake.

As a Swazi student, having come from Swaziland to do medicine in Taiwan, I had never experienced an earthquake before, earthquakes in the part of the world where I come from is not a thing that usually happens. In fact I had never felt it before I came to Taiwan, hence I only heard of or seen it on TV. Therefore as a curious person that I am, I always wondered how it does feel or what exactly happens when the earth is shaking. So, I always wished and wanted so bad that it happens so that I could experience it myself.

So, February 6, 2016 in the early hours of the Saturday morning, around 4am was the day that I will never forget in my entire life and is one of the days that has a significant experience of my life so far here in Taiwan. It was the day that I had been eagerly wishing for. On this date, February 6, 2016, I was alone in my dormitory room as schools were closed for winter-break and my roommate who happens to be also my countryman had gone home for vacation. I was deep in my sleep after I had been studying, because I usually sleep at around 2am in the morning almost everyday. While in my deep sleep, at around 4 o’clock in the morning, something shook my bed so violently that I woke up from my sleep. The way the bed was shaking, it was like somebody was literally holding the bed and vigorously and violently shaking it that I immediately woke up and sat on the bed. However, as my bed was continuously shaking, I almost fell on to the floor. That is when something clicked in my mind that something bad is happening here. I had never experienced an earthquake before, but at that moment, I knew that this was the moment I had eagerly wanted to experience. An earthquake was happening and it was shaking violently and the building was literally shaking from side to side. The experience that I felt however, was never the way I had anticipated it to be. So, when I realized that the building was shaking, I woke up and rolled a bed cover on my body an move against the wall towards the door and then stood under the thick concrete beam on the door. And that is when I heard some of my schoolmates screaming and shouting, “earthquake...earthquake”. Some even ran out from the dormitory building to the open space. Though I may not be sure of the exact time the earthquake took while it was shaking the building, but it was more than enough to make me never to wish for such experience to happen again in my life.

After this ordeal, I immediately called my wife back home and told her about what had happened and she was so scared that she was asking me to drop school and come back home, however I reassured her that it was going to be alright. Moreover, that day was the most scaring day of my entire life and from that day on, I sometimes experience some little bit of post trauma because sometimes I would feel another earthquake is happening sometimes, but when I ask those next to me, they will tell me that there is nothing happening.
