33. Why I chose to study in Taiwan?

I still remember when I decide to continue my study in abroad. This is very rare opportunity and I am sure, by pursuing master degree in other country, I can broaden my mind, experiencing new cultures, interacting with those with a background different from your own, seeing a different way of life, encourages independence, and experiencing the way other peoples do things.

Before I came here, Taiwan, all of my friends also asked about it. Why do you choose Taiwan? I said because Taiwan is one of developed country in Asia instead of Japan and South Korea. Taiwan HDI is categorize as a very high human development index. On the other hand, Taiwan has an advance technology in biotechnology and food processing instead of electronic technology. Biotechnology and food processing are the field study that I would like to take for my master degree. Other than that, Taiwan has widely known for herbal medicine knowledge and experience. Taiwan is also one of the producer for many food processing machine. Otherwise, Taiwan has many world-class research facilities. The research facilities in the university is equipped with the latest technology. I have heard from my friend that, in Taiwan you do not need to worry about Thesis or dissertation project. Because, you will have so many options to choose as your project. Teacher and professor here, is also open minded and really helpful. They will help you to adapt and achieve what you want.

Furthermore, Taiwan is also abundant in capital and very stable in economic. This country is also peaceful and safe to live in. You do not need to much worry about criminality. This place is where Asia's most vibrant venture capital industry. It is very important because I will go back to industry or private sector. So, I can learn how they work and manage their business.

My Name is Korawit Chaisu, bachelor degree graduated from Maejo University, Thailand and master degree graduated from National Pingtung Technology and Sciences (NPUST), Taiwan. I am currently studying Ph.D. degree in food-biotechnology at NPUST, Taiwan. The reasons I chose to continue my study in Ph.D. in Taiwan because it has one of the best educational system which provides students fully knowledge along with professional research skill. Moreover, studying at NPUST can fulfill my special interest in Microbiology and the benefits of microorganisms such as the plastic-degrading microorganisms in agriculture field by high-tech equipment. I believe that studying in Taiwan can develop a higher level of research which will be benefit for environmental treatment in Thailand. If I have opportunity I usually attend the international conferences to exchange and learn new knowledge from scholars.

Andile Muzi Zikalala is my name; I am now commonly called 安岱 in NPUST (National Pingtung University of Science and Technology). Opportunities arose for me to study outside Swaziland but I chose to come to Taiwan or rather Republic of China on Taiwan.

Swaziland, officially the Kingdom of Swaziland (Swazi: Umbuso weSwatini), and sometimes called Ngwane or Swatini, is a landlocked country in southern Africa, bordered to the north, south and west by South Africa, and to the east by Mozambique. The nation, as well as its people, are named after the 19th century king Mswati II.

Swaziland is a small country, no more than 200 kilometers (120 mi) north to south and 130 kilometers (81 mi) east to west. The western half is mountainous, descending to a lowveld region to the east. It is a developing country with only 1 main university for the thousands of high school students that complete schools each year.

This is in stark contrast with Taiwan. This is a developed country, with a major advances in technology, agriculture, education, sustainability, health care, electronics, communications and information technology products, petroleum refining, armaments, chemicals, textiles, iron and steel, machinery, cement, food processing, vehicles, consumer products, pharmaceuticals etc. It is able to achieve all this mainly through its most important resource – the people! This cannot be possible if the resource is not well equipped. So Taiwan has invested heavily over the years in education. To date Taiwan has more than 165 universities that offer different type of courses for different fields of studies.

There comes a point in our lives where we need to make decisions as to what we want in life. These decisions would normally make us see if we want to continue leading the lives we lead or want it to be more exciting and eye-opening by learning new things or having new experiences at home or abroad. Whatever your decision is you will never regret its outcomes because like they say everything happens for a reason. So with that said, I can say that I choose Taiwan to study because I wanted to learn in a new environment, as well it was highly recommended by my co-workers in the ministry of agriculture in Belize and friends who had experienced living in Taiwan.

Always I have heard good things about Taiwan especially when it comes to the technology in the Agriculture sector, which is of significant interest in Belize especially as a means to provide food security. In addition, we have seen many positive developments in Belize that have been carried out by the Taiwanese missionaries who are very helpful in sharing their knowledge with the farmers.

My name is Denzel Castillo from Belize, Central America. I came to Taiwan in August 2009, so I have been here almost four year. I chose Taiwan for several reasons to pursue my education in Animal Science at NPUST; some are because of its friendly people, the modern society, and its healthy environment. The opportunity to learn mandarin also was another important aspect that influenced my decision to come to Taiwan.  Education is strongly emphasized in Taiwan and the universities are the best choice for international students, thanks to the quality of teaching and the complete freedom of Taiwan’s atmosphere.  I have been trying to come to Taiwan for a long time as a possible destination to pursue my education in my area of work, however in May 2009; my third or fourth application was accepted. In terms of pursuing higher education, my opinion is that Taiwanese universities are among the best in the world.  The Taiwan Scholarship program, through ICDF has made it possible for me and studying here in Taiwan. First of all, the teaching quality in Taiwan is extremely high. Most teachers have many years of experience in teaching English to foreigners. Taking classes alongside Taiwanese students allowed me to gain unique perspectives while having conversations in Chinese related to my field of study and daily life. My classmates too are just as spectacular.  They have come to Taiwan from all over the world to study with me, and through them I get a glimpse of more experiences in places as diverse as the Pacific Islands, Asia and Africa. Studying in Taiwan is wonderful journey and one of milestone in my life.

In nowadays most students from all over the world want to study abroad knowing the advantages of having a degree from a university from another country.

For me this is the second time I am studying abroad. My first time was in the United States where I went to learn English and I also graduated with an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Agribusiness Management and my studies were sponsored by Georgetown University.  After that great experience, I became more interested in going abroad again for more education and now here in Taiwan, I am doing my Bachelor’s Degree Program in Plant Science.

When choosing a place or a university to study abroad, it is very important to search a little bit until you find what exactly you want. I choose Taiwan to study because this country has a higher education level with the latest in technology for every field I want to specialize.

Taiwan is a place of many opportunities, and the reason why I choose to come to study here is because in my field Taiwan is worldwide known, my field is animal science more specifically in aquaculture, since the moment I graduate from my high school I started to think what to study and where, so I had many choices because I really like several careers, and unfortunately I cannot study all of them so I had to decide and something I really like are animals specially to understand them their life cycles, physiology, nutritional requirements and so on.

So base on what I already was looking for and my background I decided to study Tropical agriculture at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in the south part of Pingtung in Taiwan, actually there is no more appropriate place than Asia to study this kind of careers and is because from where I come which is El Salvador, Taiwan has many similitude geographically, climatology, and atmospherically.

My biggest dream is to become a aquaculture specialist, specifically in nutrition of marine species and formulation of concentrated feeds, and due to Taiwan size and lack of common raw materials for the making of concentrated feeds is a challenge for students like me to look for new sources of uncommon raw materials and meet the animals feed and nutritional requirements.

Taiwan is a beautiful country. However, before I ever decided to come here, I had little knowledge of how wonderful, warm and friendly people are in this beautiful island, and that makes this country an even greater place to live, study, learn and travel.

Taking the chance to study in a place far away from my country has been one of the most remarkable events in my life. Since the moment I applied for the ICDF scholarship, I knew that in the case of getting elected I had to leave my family, friends, and home for a place that I didn’t know and had little idea about.

From the time I applied for the scholarship until I got the answer whether I was accepted or not was a time full of expectations and   incertitude, but there was something that I was sure about, I wanted to come to Taiwan. I think the reasons which made me want to come to Taiwan are because of curiosity and desire of self-development. Learning about other culture, getting to know people from different countries, getting a higher education of high quality, learning new languages, face the advance technology that has been developed in Taiwan, and being able to learn from every minute, person and place that I visit in Taiwan is simply great and rewarding in every aspect.

Making a decision as to where one should study is sometimes a very nerve wracking decision. Choosing an institution depends on a number of factors which may vary in their position on the list based on personal circumstances.  These are; the individual’s financial situation, geographic locations, political situation, quality of academics and research offered at the respective institution as well as opportunities to develop one’s self as a professional in their field.

Personally, what made Taiwan stand out from all the out from all the other countries with tertiary level offers, was the structure of the agricultural sector in Taiwan. Most people who are not an  agriculture major or agriculture is not particularly their  area of interest, may not know that Taiwan’s agricultural sector, unlike countries such as United States of America, consists predominantly of small farms  instead of a couple mega power cooperation’s who control majority of the market. From my perspective, this system is the most effective because the food securities of others do not lie in the hands of the selected few.  Since, my island is small and is similarly comprised of small farmers, some of the management and production techniques which are utilized here can also be implemented back home.

Education is the key to success, foundation for human development, the weapon to conquer all the miseries of life. Education has no borders. Knowledge should follow as sinking star to utmost boundary of human thought. Education is a liberate humans. Studying away from one’s home is dream of all young determinate youths; it is prestigious, full of experience, the ability to learn from different people with different thought, the ability to know different kind of human and how to interact with them, without offending their norms and values.  Studying in Taiwan is a pride and an achievement in life because its opens gate of the world to you. Studying away from home give one’s the respect, cultural diversity, experience, the chance to meet people from all the four corners of the world, being a role model in your society. I chose to study in Taiwan because of the following reasons: the strong and cordial bilateral relationship between my country The Gambia and Taiwan, the technical know-how of Taiwan and her phase towards development, peace and stability and lastly the desire to learn in foreign land.
